About Matías

Matías Vásquez Plass, known artistically as Matías Irreal, is an innovative 25-year-old multidisciplinary artist originally from Santiago, Chile, currently based in Berlin, Germany. Through constant research and experimentation, he has developed a distinctive and diverse visual language focused on fictional scenarios and emotions that emerge directly from the mind. Matías’ imaginary landscapes, representations of his unconscious, are meticulously detailed, allowing underlying messages to surface into conscious space, where viewers are invited to observe and reflect upon them. His leitmotif, making the real become unreal, encourages audiences to question the boundary between reality and fantasy.
Throughout his career, Matías has collaborated with an impressive range of galleries, artists, creative studios, and brands at both national and international levels. His ability to adapt and transform visual spaces has been demonstrated in large-scale exhibitions, such as installations on the screens of the Santiago metro, as well as in exclusive venues like the prestigious Art Angels gallery on Beverly Blvd in Los Angeles, USA, where he presented a collaborative work with renowned Chilean sculptor Ignacio Gana.
In 2025, Matías was awarded First Prize in Versiona Thyssen by the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid) for his reinterpretation of Charles Demuth’s Love, Love, Love (1928), reaffirming his interest in recontextualizing historical works through a contemporary, imaginative, and experimental lens.
His work has also been exhibited at Galería Patricia Ready in Santiago and at GAM (Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral), one of Chile’s most emblematic cultural institutions. In 2024, he had the honor of participating in Milan Fashion Week, an event that brought together leading figures in the fashion industry, where Matías contributed his artistic vision in collaboration with the Italian creative studio DeRaíz. Matías has left his mark on a wide variety of events, standing out particularly at music festivals across Chile. His practice extends beyond solo exhibitions to notable collaborative projects, such as installations in the Lollapalooza lounge area alongside the iconic gin brand Bombay, where his creativity and unique style captured public attention. He was also part of a special project in the Swiss Alps, where he was invited to design and paint murals on a historic building, revitalizing the space with his art and demonstrating his ability to transform environments through his versatile creative vision. Additionally, Matías had the honor of presenting his work in collaboration with Ignacio Gana at Art Basel Miami, one of the world’s most renowned international contemporary art fairs.
Beyond exhibitions, Matías has contributed to music videos and cinematic film projects, applying his distinctive artistic vision to a wide range of multimedia works. These collaborations often involve the creation of visually compelling elements that complement and enhance narrative and musical expression. His work in this field not only highlights his versatility but also his ability to connect different forms of artistic expression, making each project distinctive and memorable.
Currently, Matías continues to evolve his artistic practice, deepening its integration with the physical world. He has expanded his creative scope by incorporating musical productions with immersive soundscapes into his projects, as well as developing physical sculptures that enhance his digital creations. These innovations aim not only to create visual impact but also to resonate emotionally with audiences, offering artistic experiences that challenge and enrich sensory perception.
